Subject: Hubble news, Big Sunspot
Hi all,
1. HST - 15 y.o., going on 20 or more?
Good news - possibly! New Administrator of NASA, Mike Griffin, has
directed the Agency to begin planning for a possible servicing mission to the Hubble
Space Telescope. As you may know, the previous Administrator, Sean O'Keeffe,
cancelled future plans for servicing of the HST by the Space Shuttle, which
would have doomed the telescope to no more than 2 or 3 more years of working
life, or less if another gyro fails. With servicing, Hubble could continue its
superb work for many more years - at least until its successor, the James Webb
Space Telescope, is launched. The servicing mission is by no means guaranteed,
but the fact that it's being considered is great news. For more info, see the

2. Keep an eye on the lovely big sunspot, AR 756. No aurora alerts yet, but
keep a lookout just in case.
