Subject: Midsummer BBQ, 18 June; Venus
Hi all,
The IAA's annual 'Summer Solstice' Barbecue will be held as usual in the
lovely grounds of Armagh Observatory, courtesy of the Director, Prof Mark Bailey,
on Saturday 18 June.
It's the usual format - admission totally free; open to all IAA members and
their guests, and of course to Armagh Observatory and Planetarium staff. If you
would like to go, and don't fall into any of those categories, just email me!
You bring all your own food, drink, crockery, utensils, folding chairs etc if
you want them, and we provide the BBQ itself. You can bring your own portable
one too if you want.
There will be a tour of the observatory as usual, given by Mark, and
highlights this year will be the big new dome for the 18-inch on the site of the old
Schmidt dome, the restored 10-inch Grubb Dome, restored East Wing dome, and
the 'Human Orrery' - that alone should be worth going for!
We'll have solar observing if clear, and we also hope to have other
entertainments & 'diversions', still to be finalised.
We'll kick off about 3 p.m. with the tours and activities, and start the
cooking about 5 p.m., subject to final confirmation.
2. Venus is now slowly creeping out from the Sun, low down in the NW in the
evening twilight. Look about 25 degrees (about the length of the 'Plough' )
below and well right of Saturn on 3 June, that separation gradually decreasing
daily. If you can't spot it easily then, look out for it on 8 June, when it will
lie about 5 deg below right of a nice young thin crescent Moon.
