Subject: Discourse, Eclipse, Rho Cas

Hi all,

I'm off shortly to Scotland for the annular eclipse, so this will probably be 
the last email for about a week. Sighs of relief all round, I hear?

1. This note is from Prof Evert Meurs. Apologies to those of you who already 
know about it! 
"On Thursday 29 May at 18h, the ESO Director General, Prof. Catherine 
Cesarsky, will deliver a Discourse at the Royal Irish Academy on:   "The role of the 
ESO and its importance for European astronomy"
   The address of the Academy is 19 Dawson Street, Dublin 2. There will be a 
reception afterwards. I hope that many of you will be attending. Please let

2. Don't forget the eclipse: even from Ireland you can still see a nice 
partial if you are up at sunrise, with a nice clear sky down to the NE horizon, 
although the further SW you are, the less you'll see. Usual safety precautions 
please!

3. The unusual hypergiant variable Rho Cas may be about to undergo a fading 
shortly, based on spectrographic evidence. Normally around mag 4.5, the extreme 
range is 4.1 to 6.2. This is one of the least understood of all variables, 
and is well worth watching.
